🛍️ How to Set Up Your Shopify Store (Step-by-Step Guide)

Starting your e-commerce journey is exciting—but we know those first steps on Shopify can feel a bit overwhelming. Don’t worry! This guide will walk you through each part of the store setup process and help you understand what to choose when prompted, especially when setting up Shopify Payments.

✅ Step 1: Confirm You Used Your EB Shopify Discount Code!

✨ As an eCom Babes student, you get access to an exclusive Shopify discount through our official partnership! This offer is better than anything Shopify gives to the general public, and it’s designed to help you launch your business with even less upfront cost.

The step-by-step setup (including the link) is taught in the course, but if you need quick access, here’s your special link:
👉 Activate Your Shopify Deal

  1. Click “Start Free Trial”

  2. Enter your email, create a password, and name your store. (Don’t worry—your store name can be changed later!)

🧾 Step 2: Answer Shopify’s Setup Questions

After signing up, Shopify will ask a few setup questions. These help them personalize your dashboard, but they don’t affect your store’s functionality at all. No matter what you select it won't change the features you have access to.

You’ll see questions like:

  • “Are you just starting out?” → Select Yes or I’m just playing around if you're not ready to commit yet.

  • “Where will you sell?” → Choose Online store (you can add more channels later).

  • “What are you planning to sell?” → You can enter products I make or dropshipping products.

Again—none of these answers are final. You can update them anytime under your account settings.

🧰 Step 3: Set Up Your Shopify Store Details

In your Shopify Dashboard, go to Settings (bottom left corner) and walk through these sections:

📍 Store Details

  • Enter your business name, store address, and contact info.

  • This is used on invoices, taxes, and customer receipts.

  • If you don’t have a business address, you can use your home address for now and change it later.

🌍 Domains (Skip for Now)

  • Do this step along with the course!

  • You can buy a domain through Shopify or connect one from a third-party provider.

  • Not ready to commit? Use the free Shopify subdomain (yourstorename.myshopify.com) until you’re ready!

💳 Step 4: Set Up Shopify Payments (Very Important)

This allows you to accept credit cards and get paid.

You’ll be asked for:

  • Business type – Choose Individual/Sole Proprietor if you don’t have an LLC yet.

  • Product Category – Choose the category that best fits what you plan to sell (see suggestions below).

  • Banking Info – You’ll need a bank account where your payouts will be deposited.

  • Personal Info – This includes your name, address, and SSN (for identity verification).

Al this information is completely normal for Shopify to ask for.

✅ Can I change this later?
Yes! You can update your Shopify Payments details anytime in Settings > Payments.

✅ What if I have an EIN number?

You can use this number instead! You can also prove the concept for your store ideas first and then replace your SSN or just add the EIN later.

🤔 What Product Category Should I Choose?

When setting up Shopify Payments, you’ll need to choose a Business/Industry Category. This helps Shopify understand what kind of products you sell.

Here are a few common ones:

Product Type

Suggested Category

Clothing & Accessories

Apparel & Accessories

Skincare/Beauty

Health & Beauty

Home Decor

Home & Garden

Jewelry

Jewelry & Watches

Electronics

Electronics & Gadgets

General Dropshipping

Retail (General Merchandise)

💡 If you’re unsure, pick the one that best fits for now. You can update it later in the settings or you can pick General Dropshipping. Again, this isn't going to change your account or features you have access to.

🎯 Final Tips

  • Don’t stress about perfection—everything in Shopify can be updated later.

  • Save frequently and preview your store as you build.

  • Bookmark your Shopify Dashboard so you can come back and work on it and find it easily!
