Will I get in trouble selling something similar to another brand?

Yes, in general, products on AliExpress are safe to resell—that’s the whole purpose of the platform when used for dropshipping or ecommerce. Most suppliers on AliExpress are manufacturers or wholesalers expecting their products to be resold by others. That said, there are a few important things to keep in mind:

When It's Safe to Resell AliExpress Products:

  • Unbranded, generic items are usually fine to sell without needing permission.

  • If the item doesn’t have a recognizable logo, character, or design that appears to be copyrighted, you're typically in the clear.

  • AliExpress dropshipping suppliers expect store owners like you to list their products and generate orders they’ll fulfill.

⚠️ Use Caution With:

  • Designer knock-offs or replicas (e.g. bags that look like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, etc.). These are illegal to resell and could put your store at risk.

  • Products with branding or artwork that looks like it might belong to someone else—this includes images, logos, cartoons, or characters.

  • Copyrighted or trademarked items. Even if a supplier is selling it, that doesn’t mean it’s legal.

💡 Should You Contact the Supplier First?

You don’t have to contact the supplier before listing a product on your store—unless you want to:

  • Confirm stock availability

  • Ask about shipping times

  • Build a relationship if you plan to order in bulk later

  • Confirm whether they own the rights to the product (if there’s any question)

🛑 POD (Print-on-Demand) Is Different

When it comes to POD, you must be extra cautious about using original artwork or designs. No stealing or using copyrighted phrases, logos, or images. But with dropshipping from AliExpress, you’re usually selling already-manufactured items—just avoid anything that looks questionable.
