How to Set Up Shipping Profiles on Shopify: A Step-by-Step Guide

Shipping profiles in Shopify allow you to customize rates based on your products, locations, and customer preferences. In this guide, we’ll walk through setting up both U.S. and international shipping profiles with specific rates, including free shipping for U.S. orders over $50 and a flat $10 rate for international orders.

Step 1: Access Your Shipping Settings

  1. Log in to your Shopify Admin.

  2. From the Settings menu in the lower-left corner, click Shipping and delivery.

  3. In the Shipping section, you’ll see an area called Shipping profiles. Select Manage rates in your default profile to get started.

Step 2: Set Up Domestic (U.S.) Shipping Rates

  1. Under "Shipping to," locate or create a shipping zone for the United States.

  2. Click Add rate to set up your shipping rates for U.S. orders.

    • Option 1: Standard Rate (e.g., $5):

      1. Name this rate “Standard” or your preferred label.

      2. Set the Rate amount to $5 or your chosen amount.

      3. Click Done.

    • Option 2: Free Shipping (for Orders Over $50):

      1. Click Add rate again and name this rate “Free Shipping.”

      2. Check Set up a free shipping rate.

      3. Under Conditions, select Based on order price.

      4. Enter Minimum price as 50 to activate free shipping on orders over $50.

      5. Click Done.

  3. Save your changes by clicking Save in the upper-right corner.

Step 3: Set Up International Shipping Rates

  1. In the same Shipping profiles section, add or locate a shipping zone for Rest of the World or International.

  2. Click Add rate to add a shipping option for international orders.

    • Flat Rate for International Orders:

      1. Name this rate “Flat Rate” or your preferred label.

      2. Set the Rate amount to $10 to apply a flat fee to all international orders.

      3. Click Done.

  3. Save your changes by clicking Save in the upper-right corner.

Step 4: Test Your Shipping Settings

After configuring your shipping profiles, it’s a good idea to test them by adding items to the cart from different locations. This will ensure that customers see the correct rates.

  1. Visit your store as if you’re a customer.

  2. Add items to your cart, and adjust the shipping destination to check that U.S. orders over $50 show free shipping, U.S. orders below $50 show your standard rate, and international orders show a $10 flat rate.

Tips for Managing Your Shipping Profiles

  • Add Products to Different Profiles if some require unique shipping rates (like heavy or fragile items).

  • Consider Customizing International Rates if certain countries require different handling.

  • Communicate Shipping Policies on your website to help set customer expectations.

Setting up these profiles ensures that you’re offering clear, customer-friendly options that align with your business goals.
