Okay so it's time to create your logo and you are psyched!
I get it, creating the branding for your store is super fun, its one of my favorite things to do.
But, sometimes when things are super fun, we tend to overcomplicate them, and spend hours and hours on them.
The thing is, your logo is just a small piece of the puzzle, and the faster you get it done, the faster you can get into the real meat of creating a successful brand - launching and testing!
The best way to move through this step while staying focused is to keep things simple.
I know when jumping in and starting to create, its so tempting to use all the colors, all the icons, using all the catch phrases - but the reality is, this logo is going to be so small, many of these elements are going to get lost and ultimately look messy.
There's this video that went viral on TikTok a while back and I think it illustrates this concept perfectly, its by a creator named @ms.nicolemonay (click here to watch video).
What she says is basically this - your logo should be sized in a way that it could be tattooed on your index finger and still be clear and easy to read. She titled this the "Index Finger Rule."
So what looks best on an index finger? Clean, bold, and simple text, white/transparent background - sometimes an icon but this is rare.
I see often students are tempted to use colored backgrounds, circles around the text, multiple different icons (like silhouettes, stars, lipstick, dots etc etc), neon colors, dated or hard to read fonts - these aren't going to translate well on websites, and they tend to make brands look dated.
I created some logos using some of the most common mistakes so lets take a look:
Now, lets take a look at some of the most well known and trusted brands:
So what do all of these logos have in common? Can you see it?
They are all TEXT logos
There's nothing complicated about them, they don't have tons of elements, colored backgrounds. They aren't shaped like a circle.
They are clean, simple and recognizable.
When it comes to eCommerce, you never have to reinvent the wheel.
There are brands that are successful that have already done the work, spent millions on branding, and know what works. Look at what your competitors are doing, and follow their lead.
We don't have millions to invest in logo and brand design, but we don't need it because other brands have already done it.
They already did all the testing, focus groups, etc etc - so we know that what they have WORKS, and there's a reason their logos are simple like this.
So let's take those first logos, and re-create them with the new information we have learned!
See how much better these look?
Now of course, you can go back in and change the colors - keep it simple though - no neon!
But these are way more trustworthy than the ones we started with.
So if you are designing your logo - take hints from the most successful brands out there!
Don't reinvent the wheel.
And most importantly - KEEP IT SIMPLE!
