Choosing your store and domain name can be one of the most exciting (and frustrating) parts of opening your business, and there are a few things to keep in mind when choosing.

Just because a domain is available, doesn't mean you should use it

When thinking about what you are going to sell, sometimes we choose niches that are related to other, more established brands - for example Iphone cases. However, we don't need (or want) our domains to reference those other brands.

So in this case, if we are selling Iphone cases, we wouldn't want to use the words iphone or Apple in our domain, this could cause legal trouble down the line.

Another no no is drug, weapon or explicit words

Although putting curse words might sound fun in the beginning, Facebook will actually not let you run ads - which is going to cause a major headache down the line.

This goes for weapon or drug related words as well so anything with, gun, knife, sword, weed, cocaine, CBD (not joking!), can cause you some trouble with Facebook.

Stay away from THE Mouse

Any guesses on who I am talking about? Mickey of course! Disney is one of the harshest enforcers of trademark and copyright and you do not want to be on the wrong side with the mouse.

It's always a good rule of thumb to stay way from anything Disney, Marvel, Harry Potter, etc etc to protect yourself from any trademark infringement.

Final thoughts

It's always best to be unique and original, use your creativity and K-I-T, Keep It Simple.

Google unpopular baby names, plant names, color names, head to Pinterest, get inspo from Instagram and most importantly, don't overthink it!
