Protect Yourself in POD

Take it from someone who realized ALMOST too late that some of their designs were actually... illegal!

Now don't freak out - I took one for the team and made these mistakes so I could teach you!

Building a business from scratch, isn't easy - and you are going to make mistakes (just like I did!) but take everything one step at a time and it will all work out, I promise!

Heres how you can protect yourself when it comes to POD and your designs:

Always look for "Commercial license"

Do not use anything that says "personal use only" - this means you can only use the designs for personal use (meaning you won't be making money off of it). If you use this and the creator finds out, you might be in for a little issue.

Always look for the "commercial license" or "commercial use", sometimes it might cost a little extra, sometimes it's free and included, but you have to double check.

This goes for fonts, actual designs, and sayings.

Stay away from Trademarked or Copyright designs

Even though they are selling it on Etsy and say you can use it for commercial use, doesn't necessarily mean you can - always double check and use your common sense.

Most TV or big brand related icons, designs, fonts, and sayings are protected through trademark or copyright - you always want to double check!

You can always search the trademark here.

When in doubt... Google

Sometimes certain sayings have drama around them, and you won't know unless you google - so I always recommend Googling before adding a new saying to your designs. This could save you some major stress!

Canva is SAFE!

If you use Canva elements and fonts - you are good to go (with everything other than the saying/slogan you use).

If you use the FREE version of Canva, all the FREE fonts and elements are safe for you to use. Using any PAID element without paying for it is illegal... if you pay for it you will be fine!

If you have the PAID version of Canva - you can use everything!

Additional Questions?

If you have any specific questions about designs or trademarking, its always best to chat with a lawyer, they can tell you specifics and really make sure you are on the right track before something stressful happens!
